<image:caption>Separate Oceans, an evening-length performance work that examines virtual systems of emotion and affect. Making parallels between digital spaces and the rhythms of the natural world, Separate Oceans incorporates dancing, live video feed, and projections that all draw inspiration from the ways humans increasingly depend on digital systems for desire and fulfillment. <image:caption>Just like the proteins in the poem "Prion" by Sarah Rose Nordgren, the dancers in Proteo fold into each other through differing landscapes and shifting allegiances. Movement impulses travel across boundaries of space and time as the 12 performers are woven together through fragmented relationships. <image:title>Structures/Forms - Structures/Forms asks about the role of structures and forms in our concepts of the future.</image:title>
<image:caption>Structures/Forms asks about the role of structures and forms in our concepts of the future We are at a cultural moment in which the fallibility and violence in existing structures has become painfully apparent. In this collection of work, artists are looking at how form informs our understanding of the now. These works range from an examination on practice, a reordering of footage lost and found, a performance that layers language, to an interactive website of music and movement. Nostalgia, abstraction, dailiness, and lineage weave through each work as each artist considers how the self interacts with the forms around it. It is our (optimistic) hope that by challenging/shifting/examining our current structures, we can imagine new ones. —Kathleen Kelley</image:caption>

<image:title>Rae Yuping Hsu - Artist from Taipei, currently a graduate student at the Art, Culture, Technology program at MIT. Her practice is materially-informed and research-based, engaging a range of materials from glass to bacteria, to advance research in bioart and endosymbiotic aesthetics. The process of fermentation stands in as a muse for the body, in its abjectness and with its symbiotic affordances, to create a space where empathic gut feelings can emerge, with many entangled forms of collaboration and contamination. Working with the MIT Media Lab’s Space Exploration Initiative, recent works speculate on microbial ethics within interplanetary travel, reconstructed against narratives of space colonization. Her works have been shown in Taipei Art Awards, Kaoshiung Art Awards, NTMOFA Art awards, Dubai BAIT15, Taipei Digital Art festival, Medialab Prado, Sakiya Ramallah, Rhode Island convention center, ARTTaipei, Taipei Yiri Art Gallery, Waley Arts Gallery. <image:title>Suku Dance Lab - Suku Dance Lab creates evocative and accessible performances rooted in dance and theater. Holding collaboration at the center of our process, we call upon various dance lineages, elements of voice, and live music to establish a dynamic and nuanced lens through which to examine community - how human experiences can be deeply unique and simultaneously universal. At our core, Suku Dance Lab strives to build a radically inclusive culture in arts that challenges commonly-held ideas of what performance should look like while celebrating the fullness of our own stories.</image:title>

<image:title>Empathy - Structures/Forms asks about the role of structures and forms in our concepts of the future.</image:title>
<image:caption>Empathy considers touch, connection and human emotion in our concepts of the future Moving through this festival, we’ve seen artists question our structures and now we segue into another theme of work: empathy. In this historical moment it feels so urgent to engage in empathy. We are marching, we are connecting, we are crying, we are hurting, we are celebrating progress, we are experiencing, we are learning, we are calling out, we are calling on, we are planting, we are burning, we are rebuilding, we are exhausted and there is more work to be done and it is due now. The work from these collection of artists use empathy as an impetus to drive collaborations, as a practice of reflection, and as a way to reconsider how we interact with our environments. We invite you to sit with these works, visit, re-visit, feel, fuel and repeat. It is my hope that with this practice of empathy we can navigate the future as a collective. —Bree Breeden</image:caption>

<image:title>Digital identities - Structures/Forms asks about the role of structures and forms in our concepts of the future.</image:title>
<image:caption>Digital Identities examines how we negotiate, define, and defend ourselves in the digital sphere How do we define ourselves in this moment of primarily digital connection? There is a fundamental shift happening in our understanding of the self in the world. In the fight for Black lives and the COVID pandemic, our culture is struggling between individualism and collectivism, between selfish oblivion and critical self analysis and healing. These issues are deeply personal and yet deeply systemic. In the work of all of these artists, we can see them examining their individual identities and exploring the shifting concepts and conversations around identity, self-presentation, healing, and emotional engagement in our digital sphere. —Kathleen Kelley</image:caption>

<image:title>slowdanger + Smart Snow - Smart Snow is a collaboration between dance choreographer and media artist Kathleen Kelley and poet Sarah Rose Nordgren. Since meeting at a high school party and recognizing each other as artistic soul-mates, they have been working together formally and informally for over 15 years. Smart Snow gives a name to their lifelong artistic relationship.. Smart Snow creates art that pushes the forms of dance and poetry into new technological territories. As women working at the intersections between art and tech, Kathleen and Sarah Rose are interested in the mirrored relationship between technological and evolutionary processes and the “natural” and the “human” inside of digital spaces.</image:title>

<image:title>Catherine Eng - I am an inter-mediary dance artist who’s interested in addressing topics of technology and experiences of being through theoretically backed collaborative performances. Frequently a collaborative performer, I’ve worked with Sara Rudner, Rou Rou Ye, and ZCO Dance Project, a mixed ability dance company. My performance work has shown around New York including at Arts on Site, Triskelion Arts, Movement Research, Chen Dance Center, and in Chicago at the Logan Center for the Arts. With the change of times I’ve started to share my secret video projects from the past few years, including Foil Dress Task, a video dance that recently premiered at the Sarah Lawrence Dance film Festival.</image:title>

<image:title>Azteca Sirias - Sirias Movement is a Brown creative collective directed by Azteca Sirias. The collective is a transdisciplinary platform that researches indigenous truths and experiences. Azteca's background is in dance and computer science. Although the two are seemingly separate, they have distinctively revolutionary intersections that are explored through Sirias Movement. The collective transforms indigenous narratives and reconnects the community to its source at present. Ultimately, the collective proposes ways to free and transcend time and space.</image:title>

<image:caption>SCORE FOR EVENING When the sun goes down. How do you greet the ending of this solar day? Take a minute (or twenty) to transition into the absence of daylight. Light a candle, or read a poem, or sit quietly and watch the light remove itself.</image:caption>

<image:caption>SCORE FOR CONFRONTING THE INEVITABLE Find a space on your own. Walk the perimeter, or the margins. With studios and common spaces closing left and right, this might be your roof, a corner of your bedroom, a spot in your backyard. Outside is preferable, but indoors will work too - especially if you can see out a window. Find a location. Root your feet. Set a timer for 20 minutes. Put on a piece of music in your headphones that is ambient/driving/rageful/sorrowful/what you like. Begin to rumble. Feel how this is different outside of a studio. [in my case the roof is uneven, i have to shift my feet] Let your attention wander. Follow planes/birds/the skyline. Notice what is blooming. What is still in winter. Who has their windows open, who is watching tv, who else is on their roof. If it is cold tighten your jacket down around your face and let it be cold. If you are sweating, feel it drip down the small of your back. Shake off like an animal. This is a fearful time. It is okay to be scared. And it is okay to feel things. If you weep - fantastic. If you laugh maniacally - fantastic. Look to the graveyard, to the hill, to the buildings, to the silver of the roof coating, to your busted shoes. Remember that we have always been here in this moment doing this. Take comfort in what connections you find, let time become uneven, send your spells.</image:caption>

<image:caption>SCORE FOR ENDING End by standing still. Be present or not Use your imagination Sing a song to yourself internally Imagine your body disintegrating. Flesh turning blue. Being devoured by creatures. Bones held together by sinew, you are the shape of what you once were Imagine the sinew deteriorating, melting away. you are just a pile of bones. They scatter and migrate through the soil their meaning no longer derived from their spatial relationship to one another, or from the way they carried you through the world. These too decompose, the bacteria and fungi and acidic soil doing their job And then you are just dirt/dust</image:caption>

These works range from a critical examination of White masculinity, a meditation on distortion and the moving body, a performance evoking distinctly queer structures, and a collection of artist narratives. Nostalgia, abstraction, dailiness, and lineage weave through each work as each artist considers how the self interacts with the forms around it. It is our (optimistic) hope that by challenging/shifting/examining our current structures, we can imagine new ones. —Kathleen Kelley</image:caption>

Performances, often in alternative spaces, take inspiration from everyday objects, dreams and historical references, merging elements of reality and magical realism. Her installations include handcrafted wearable objects and textiles, capture the moving body through space in digital video and photographs. Collaboration with dancers, performers, and artists is an integral part of the studio practice, at home and while traveling.</image:title>

<image:title>Sara Hook + Betsy Brandt Grand Etude Playing Dead - Dramaturg Betsy Brandt and choreographer/performer Sara Hook have worked together on numerous projects, including “Janes" (2019), "Bored House Guests” with Paul Matteson (2014), and "Erstwhiles and Somnambulations" with Elizabeth Johnson (2017). Brandt currently lives in St Louis, MO where she is on the faculty at Webster University and is an active member of the interdisciplinary arts community. Sara Hook has been making work for over 30 and is currently on faculty at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. Hook and Brandt share a keen attentiveness to dance history, a proclivity towards disciplinary promiscuity, and an interest in the relationships between gender, sensuality, sexuality, and technique.</image:title>

Frequently a collaborative performer, I’ve worked with Sara Rudner, Rou Rou Ye, and ZCO Dance Project. My performance work has shown around New York including at Arts on Site, Triskelion Arts, Movement Research, Chen Dance Center, and in Chicago at the Logan Center for the Arts. With the change of times I’ve been focusing on my video projects, including Foil Dress Task premiered at the Sarah Lawrence Dance film Festival in 2020 and I only move in circles now as part of the 2020 Post/Futures festival.</image:title>

<image:title>Leah Wilks + Jessica Alexander Becoming indoor/outdoor cats - 10-10-10(score for when it feels hard to start):</image:title>
<image:caption>Pick 3-4 actions from the list below. Decide how many 30-40 minute cycles you have time to complete. Set a timer to go off every 10minutes. Spend 10 minutes in each of your chosen actions until you have visited them all. Repeat the cycle. And, if you have time, repeat again. Actions: Relocate, write, sit, move. Also options: Observe your nearby surroundings with a narrow lens. Observe your surroundings with a wide and far-reaching lens. Each time you visit this score, allow your rendering of each action to change with your needs-physical or mental. This score was adapted from a score passed to Jessica from Courtney Mazeika and Sarah Woods-LaDue and further refined with Madison Doyle and Jacqueline Kopra. It has appeared in many different contexts before and after. It is a multipurpose score that has helped us to start when it feels hard or better understand new places and old ones.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Begin still (upright). Close your eyes and begin to slowly rotate a full 360 degrees feeling the wind (or lack thereof) on all sides of your body. Choose a direction to move into, away from, or accross the wind. Decide which side of your body will be facing into the wind. Take 20 steps (or 50 if you like) in your chosen direction trying to match your tempo to the force of the wind. If the direction of the wind changes, try to keep your relationship to it the same. At the end of your steps, pause. Notice the first thing you notice. Respond to this thing in movement. When complete, repeat the whole pattern moving into/away/across the wind differently than the previous round. Go for 10 rounds, or as long as you like. When you finish, take a moment to note your orientation to the space you are in with all the information the wind provided you.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Begin by lying/sitting/standing passively (or in stillness) in the sun. Perhaps close your eyes. Do this for at least ten minutes.Let the sun be your passive-solar warm up. Notice temperature on the different sides of your body. Observe how this interacts with your sense of comfort, the tension in your body, any holding/releasing. As the sun soaks into your skin/clothes, move in order to attend to temperature. Lean into this investigation of temperature by exploring both what your body is and is not drawn to. Can you invite in more luxuriousness, even in less-than-comfortable conditions? Could this temperature, this sun, be perfect for exactly the dance you are doing right now? If your eyes are closed, open them. What is the interaction with the sun through vision? Can you still hold onto the attention to sensation and temperature while also engaging with the light and shadow through vision?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Decide on a space where you can move backwards for a distance. This could be long runways down and back or circular...perhaps the perimeter of a field. Decide if you want to begin upright walking backwards, on hands and knees crawling backwards, or on soles of feet and palms of hands bear-walking backwards. Know that you can change at any point. Set a timer for 45 minutes. Begin your backwards traverse going as slowly or quickly as needed. If your body gets tired, change your position or tempo. Attempt to not turn around to see where you’re going. When the timer goes off, pause. Notice the sensations in your body. Respond in movement for the next 10 minutes in whatever way arises for you.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Find a place where you can close your eyes. Observe what you can hear. Try to parse out one sound and then open your eyes. Begin moving in response, in tandem, or in anticipation of the sound. Let the sound guide you rhythmically for a time. Then perhaps let the quality of the sound infiltrate the quality of your movement. How does your distance from the sound interact with your movement? Repeat as many times as you like, attending to one sound at a time. If you like, after you have spent time deeply exploring each sound, begin to try them on at the same time (perhaps in different body parts, or quickly oscillating from sound to sound, or layering in your body, or, or, or....)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Find a transition place (cement to gravel, sidewalk to grass, etc.). Choose a side to start on. Walk forward and when you arrive at an endpoint walk backward. Do this three times. Once on each side and once in the transition space. In each place notice what information about the ground passes through your feet. How your ankles feel. How does that translate or affect the rest of your body? Notice sound - the sound of your steps. Then take time to move between the three, noticing which ones you drift towards, how your movement changes, and what sounds are created. Walk the seam forward and backwards again, taking time to digest what you observed, what might feel different? Choose a side, and walk away.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Find a section of river/creek/stream/moving water without a strong current. Set a timer to go off repetitively every 7-10 minutes depending on how long you have. Step into the water. Start your timer and begin traveling in the direction of the flow of water (this could be walking forwards, walking backwards, crawling, wading…). When the timer goes off, pause, close your eyes and re-orient your facing. Open your eyes and briefly respond in movement to the first thing you notice (this could be visual, but also could be a sound or other sensation). Consider this as a light documentation of this particular node in the river. When you feel done documenting, begin traveling with the flow of water again. Allow any humming or singing or vocalizing to arise as you traverse, or simply tune into the soundscore around you. Repeat for as long of a stretch of river as you feel like going. When you are done, climb out and give yourself a moment to feel the difference. Walk back along the bank, or wherever on dry land is safest to return to your original starting place.</image:caption>
